WHAT ARE THE PREDISPOSING FACTORS?Knowing the fact that being a female is a determinant on its own for the development of cellulite there are other factors that favour its appearance or make it worse. These factors facilitate the physiopathologic process involved in the development of cellulite and its effects (adiposis, venous and lymphatic ectasis and fibrosis): Congenital Factors:individuals with a past history of cellulite are more predisposed to suffer from this condition. Race Factors:it has a higher incidence in Caucasians (mainly in the Mediterranean area) and in blacks, with a lower incidence in Asiatics. Hormone Factors:pregnancy, menopause and oral contraceptives in females; antiandrogenic therapy (oestrogen treatment against prostate cancer) or processes that cause a severe androgen deficit (Klinefelter Syndrome, orchitis sequelae, castration, etc.), hormone treatment with corticoids, pocesses that normally present a situation of hyperinsulinemia such as type II diabetes mellitus, severe obesity or polycystic ovarian syndrome. Vascular And Lymphatic Factors:venous or lymphatic insufficiency of any type, processes accompanied by oedema or water retention. Other Factors:overweight, sedentary life style, stress, affective disorders, lack of sleep, tight clothing, bad diet habits, high fat content foods and high salt content foods, carbohydrates, consumption of alcohol and tobacco.
