WHAT IS FLACCIDNESS?Flaccidness is a skin dysfunction inherent to the natural or accelerated aging process, linked structurally to a lower production of collagen. Morphological changes are the result of severe alterations in the tissues. Initially there is a dysfunction of cell metabolism, as a result of a drop in collagen and elastin biosynthesis and also as a result of a drop in mucopolysaccharides in the fundamental substance. The number of fibroblasts drops and the dermis looses its normal tropism, becoming of poor quality and losing its capacity to replace itself. The collagen and elastin network provides support to the epidermis by way of its attachment to dermal papillae and underlying tissues. Failure of this complex organic structure (elastin and collagen and fundamental substance) causes a more or less apparent mechanical disconnection between the dermis and epidermis.
