WHAT IS BOTOX AND HOW DOES IT WORK?Botox, commonly marketed in Spain under the trademark “Vistabel”, is a pharmacological compound containing a neurotoxin produced by the Clostridum Botulinum bacterium. It is a type-A purified botulinum toxin. This product has been in use since the 80s in ophthalmology and neurology. It was approved for aesthetic applications in Spain in 2004, and has been approved in 25 other countries. This treatment is indicated for the temporary treatment of expression wrinkles in the upper third of the face: crows feet, frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead wrinkles. The product permits a discrete elevation of the tail of the eyebrow, thereby improving eye expression. How Does It Work? Its acts on neuromuscular junction (at the connection between nerve and muscle) and inhibits the release of choline-acetyl, the neurotransmitter that carries the nerve impulse to the muscle. This product has proved to be effective in small doses and the relaxating effects are dose-dependent and reversible.
